An Awkward Conversation at the Recruiting Office

According to the Pentagon, 1,367 soldiers lost all or part of their genitals in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq between 2001 and 2013. Bet that’s not something they tell you at the recruiting center.

ISIS, Full-Fledged Nation-State

The Islamic State wants to be a full-service nation-state. What would ISIS look like if it governed like a legitimate nation-state like the United States? Let’s take a look.

Moderate Republicans, For What They’re Worth

Most of the mainstream Republican Party presidential candidates advocate extreme positions on immigration, including mass deportations. They deny the reality of climate change science and evolution. They think torture is fine, oppose gay marriage, and remain silent about the murder of abortionists. Amid this shift to the right, some “moderate” Republicans say they’re still a legitimate voice within the party. But does it matter?

Take It Seriously

“Mainstream” Republican presidential candidates complain that Donald Trump refuses to pretend to be serious.

We’re Not Barbarian (Americans)!

People in the West wonder where the Islamic State will strike next after the Paris attacks. Some commentators wonder aloud whether ISIS would strike a hospital, ignoring the irony that the U.S. blew up a hospital in Afghanistan recently.

Dangerous Refugees

Donald Trump suggests that Syrian and Muslim refugees should have to register with the police in the United States. Maybe he has a point: Native Americans would still be alive if they hadn’t allowed British terrorists to slip in alongside religious refugees.

Love, American-Style

Though it was nice of Americans to offer their support to the French after ISIS’ terrorist attacks against Paris last week, surely Parisians remember that, not so recently, Americans were deriding them as “cheese-eating surrender monkeys” and renaming French fries “freedom fries” merely because they were smart enough not to join our invasion of Iraq?

Generation Hexed

Political analysts note that there aren’t any Gen X-era big-name Democrats following Baby Boomers Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. They anticipate that leadership will skip Gen X from the Boomers to their Millennial children. Meanwhile, middle-aged Gen X whites are suffering increased mortality reminiscent of the post-Soviet collapse during the 1990s. Turns out that a lifetime of neglect and contempt by those older and younger is having an effect.
