China’s oppression of its Uyghur minority in the western province of Xinjiang has been well documented for decades but it’s only now, that China is hosting the Beijing Olympics, that the West is finally paying attention. Forgotten in the belated outcry is America’s own role in oppressing the very same people, doing China’s dirty work for it as part of the so-called war on terror.

I mean no disrespect (because what is happening to the Uyghurs is an obscenity) but I think part of the problem is the name. The Golden State Killer was originally the East Area Rapist. EAR? Kind of hard from a news-marketing perspective to get people alarmed about EAR. P.J. O’Rourke pointed out a similar problem dealing with Bosnia. All the names were long and had no vowels. If people can’t pronounce it, they get uncomfortable and avoid it. If it isn’t catchy, they don’t stay interested.
Relying on the BBC for an accurate explanation of “the Uyghur situation” is like using that other “old-empire” source, “The Economist,” for an accurate analysis of Marxism.
