The filibuster is the most powerful legislative tool available to the minority in the United States Senate. Why on earth would Democrats want to get rid of it now that there is an overwhelming likelihood they will lose control of the Senate this November?

My sense of it is that the Biden administration is doing what most of us do when we put off something crucial for too long. They’re panicking. Trying to read Gulliver’s Travels and write the book report the night before it’s due. Biden’s had over a year in office, and he’s managed nothing, except screwing up everything. Biden needs something now. Something that takes effect by July at the latest. Something bigly. Really, student loan cancellation (and end the program altogether — watch as tuition prices plummet) is the only thing that fits the bill. No one’s getting excited about Amtrak getting new tracks.
It’s not just Biden who wants to end the filibuster,, it’s the whole party. But then, the DP is a bit of a gerontocracy….are they all drifting over the line? So it seems.
Over the line, across the shoulder, into the canal. And just like before, there’s a way to minimize the damage, but they won’t/don’t/can’t think of it.
Because the Republicans will eliminate it as soon as they retake the majority. And for cover, they’ll say it’s because the Democrats *contemplated* ending it. Just like they’ve done in the past.
