Team Biden responds to concerns that the president may be senile with assurances that, behind the scenes, Biden is energetic and sharp. We don’t get to see that, of course…not that we get to see much of the Leader of the Free World at all. Maybe it’s time for Team Trump to deploy their own version of “you don’t know him the way I know him” argument.

It goes back all the way to Reagan (at least) doesn’t it? Carter at least had scientific training (as well as the real-world experience of dealing with the Chalk River reactor meltdown). But they’re all just a batch of pseudo-intellectuals preening and mugging at the camera (an apt description of Rachel Maddow, David Muir, etc., etc.) Going back to Reagan, it’s check all that apply: nepo baby, “businessman” who made the high-level political connections, lawyer, celebrity. All occupations that require (or, at the very least, benefit extremely from) charisma, charm, and the other skills that affinity grifters have in abundance.
Yes, they are both so old that, at the very least, it shows in their speech-making ability. And Biden’s affinity for Netanyahu and Trump’s affinity for Putin are significant minuses. However at least under Biden we got a green new deal (strangely entitled “the inflation reduction act”) and better Supreme Court picks. If I have to choose between these two too-old guys, the choice is easy.
It was called the inflation reduction act because, environmentally, it wasn’t enough from the start. And by the time President Manchin had finished telling Biden how to whittle it down even further, it was even less so. Of course, Manchin isn’t the only one who’s in bed with the fossil fuels people. Biden’s make-nice make-nice with his petro pals pretty much wipes out whatever marginal “progress” was made via the IRA.
