Warmongers in both major political parties say that we shouldn’t “abandoned” Afghanistan as if a violent occupation that brutalizes the population is something that anyone who lives there wouldn’t want to see come to an end.

Pretty sure there’s a fair amount of people there (especially emancipated women and sexual minorities) who don’t want to be left to the Taliban’s tender mercies. It would be downright ideal if the Afghan army could somehow hold them off on its own, but off the top of my head I suspect large parts of it are more likely to defect to them before long, with disastrous consequences for non-compliant parts of the population. Though America may as well pull out since it’s never going to commit to the extent necessary to pacify the country. Sooner or later they’ll have to rip that band-aid off.
