Israel is about to launch a ground invasion into the Gaza Strip with the war aim of toppling the Hamas government and installing a compliant puppet regime. Recent history suggests the long-term outcome of this strategy goes not give much cause for optimism.

I’ve mentioned Barbara Tuchman before, especially her use of the term “wooden-headedness,” which she (in part) defines as “the refusal to learn from experience.” I truly begin to wonder if Team Biden is actually just a whole bunch of Trump operatives. The optics on this thing are already lousy, with footage getting into the news cycle of Gazan civilians running for their lives. So far, no naked little girls covered in napalm, but we should have “the image” (the single photo that crystallizes the entirety of a conflict into one horrible frame) soon enough.
I don’t see how there’s any way for Biden’s owners to use this war and all this suffering to Biden’s political advantage. All the likely outcomes I can imagine end up exploding in Biden’s face, and probably right around the time the election campaigning really kicks in.

I saw such an image from our war in Iraq … a member of US armed services holding an Iraqi child after the home where its parents were just killed. It was truly awful and made the popular press, but changed nothing. I think we are now immune to the potency of “the image.”
