Iran to US: Drop Dead! | DeProgram with Ted Rall and John Kiriakou

Political cartoonist Ted Rall and CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou deprogram you from mainstream media every weekday at 9 AM EST.

Today we discuss:

• As the US/Israeli war against Iran enters its 4th week, Iran has little interest in diplomacy and is escalating attacks on its neighbors, betting it can increase global economic pain faster than the US and Israel can blow up targets. Trump gave Iran a 48-hour deadline that expires today to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, threatening to “obliterate” the country’s civilian power plants—a  war crime that says Iran would avenge regionally. Stocks will plunge 1% today; oil futures are at $111/barrel, up 67% since pre-war, as Iran threatens to mine the Strait and strike Gulf State water facilities.

• As LaGuardia investigates a plane crash and remains closed, ICE is being deployed to US airports to assist TSA and, according to Trump, arrest illegal immigrants. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said ICE at airports is “the last thing that the American people need … potentially to brutalize or in some instances, kill them.”

• The head of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, says that the crisis in the Middle East has had a worse impact on oil than the two oil shocks of the 1970s combined, and a worse effect on gas than the Russia-Ukraine war.

F&#k You! And Pay Me $200 Billion | DeProgram with Ted Rall and John Kiriakou

Live at 9 AM Eastern & Streaming 24-7 Thereafter:

Political cartoonist Ted Rall and CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou deprogram you from mainstream media every weekday at 9 AM EST.

Today we discuss:

• The Defense Dept. asks Congress for $200 billion for an Iran War they were never asked about. Will Congress pay anyway?

Iran is gaining the upper hand as it squeezes the global economy. Iranian attacks on Qatar’s Ras Laffan LNG facilities slashed Qatar’s export capacity by 17% and will take 3-5 years to repair, as oil rose to $108/barrel. The U.S. may lift sanctions on Iranian oil at sea and release more oil from its strategic reserves to lower prices. Netanyahu says Israel acted alone in its attack on a gas facility in Iran. Saudi Arabia threatens Iran. A tanker operator paid $2 million for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

• Mediators have given Hamas a “take it or leave it” proposal to hand over all weapons, leaving an undefined new authority in charge. Hamas will wait to see the outcome of the Iran war before replying.

• Worried that he might be hobbled by the unpopular Iran War, JD Vance might not run in 2028. 65% of Americans think Trump will order a large-scale ground war in Iran— just 7% are in favor, a Reuters/Ipsos poll finds. Trump’s broader approval is 40%

Denmark prepared to deploy troops to Greenland to sabotage Greenland’s airstrips with explosives and flew in blood supplies amid fears of a potential U.S. invasion earlier this year.

Gabby Tulsi | DeProgram with Ted Rall and John Kiriakou

LIVE 9:00 am Eastern time, Streaming Anytime:

Political cartoonist Ted Rall and CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou deprogram you from mainstream media every weekday at 9 AM EST.

Today we discuss:

Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence, rats out Trump’s big Iran lies. The president said the Iran was rebuilding its nuclear enrichment capabilities—but that’s not what the CIA and other intel agencies told him, she tells Congress. Trump also said Iran was “two weeks away” from ICBMs that could reach the US, but Tulsi said Iran hasn’t even tried and, if it started now, couldn’t achieve them until at least 2035.

• Is the Iran War running out of gas? Israel’s strike against Iran’s South Pars gas field, which Iran shares with Qatar and is the largest such facility in the world, was approved by Trump—but he denies it, even while threatening to blow it up entirely if Iran strikes Qatar—which Iran just did. Qatar’s foreign ministry called it a “dangerous and irresponsible step.” After stocks fell to a record low for the year and oil prices soared to $119/barrel—a 67% increase—and France called for a moratorium on attacks against energy facilities, Trump changed his mind and does not want any ‌further strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure.

Blue Glove Blues | DeProgram with Ted Rall and John Kiriakou

LIVE 9:00 am Eastern time, Streaming Anytime:

Political cartoonist Ted Rall and CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou deprogram you from mainstream media every weekday at 9 AM EST.

Today we discuss:

• If the Homeland Security Dept. shutdown continues, some smaller airports may have to shut down entirely within weeks due to a shortage of TSA security screeners. Typically, under 2% of TSA workers call in sick or do not report to work. At Atlanta, JFK and Houston, no-show rates are about 20%.

• In public, Israel is urging Iranians to revolt against their government. Privately, senior Israeli officials are telling the U.S. that Iranians will “get slaughtered” if there’s an uprising, according to a leaked State Department cable.

• Israel and the U.S. are relying on targeted assassinations in their war against Iran. But decapitation strikes against figures like Ali Larijani, Iran’s de facto leader, and Esmail Khatib, intelligence minister, has its limits, and may even prove counterproductive by radicalizing the government and marginalizing moderates. Iranian missiles are flying all over the Middle East.

• Israel has ordered a mass evacuation of southern Lebanon and is subjecting central Beirut to heavy bombing in its attacks against Hezbollah.

• Democrats are turning against AIPAC. Only two out of four AIPAC-backed candidates won special elections yesterday.

• The Strait of Hormuz shutdown has several countries on the ropes. Myanmar, Vietnam and the Philippines, according to the SocGen commodities team, 80%+ of their oil via Hormuz, and only have about a month of oil in storage before they run out. Singapore has 40 days of inventory. Thailand has 50 days. Taiwan can last about 100 days. Bangladesh can last about 100 days, and has already instituted fuel rationing and shuttered fertilizer plants.

LIVE 9:00 am Eastern time, Streaming Anytime:

Political cartoonist Ted Rall and CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou deprogram you from mainstream media every weekday at 9 AM EST.

Today we discuss:

• Trump didn’t consult with European allies before attacking Iran. Now he wants their help reopening the Strait of Hormuz. They’re rejecting him—and now Trump is seriously annoyed. Meanwhile, Iran denies Israel’s claim that it killed security chief Ali Larijani.

More registered voters view Israel negatively than positively in, driven by change among independents and especially Democrats. “This is unrecognizable in terms of where America was, and the Democratic Party was, for a 20-, 30-year history,” said Republican pollster Bill McInturff. The 2028 Democratic primary is “going to be fought on very, very different terrain in regards to the issue of Israel,” he says.

• In an echo of the U.S. bombing of the Iranian elementary school, Pakistan claimed it was targeting a Taliban ammunition depot but instead killed at least 400 people in a drug rehabilitation center in Kabul, Afghanistan. Pakistan’s war aims are unarticulated.

Cuba plunged into a total electricity blackout as Trump muses he can “take” the island if he wants.

A Funny Thing Happened to John Kiriakou

John Kiriakou wasn’t exactly down and out. But he was struggling.

Not only was John broke, he was drowning in legal fees he owed to the lawyers who’d defended him when the federal government came after him. Despite an impressive resume, whose entries included Arabic fluency, a storied CIA career and authoring bestselling books, he couldn’t find a decent job. He wound up on food stamps. Whether the hitch was his age (61) or being blacklisted by U.S. government, who could say?

About those last three items: under different circumstances, in a fairer country during a better time, John would have been considered a hero. To those who knew the truth, that’s exactly what he was. John Kiriakou was the whistleblower who exposed the CIA’s Bush-era torture program, infamous for waterboarding and other atrocities. Rather than the medal and a ticker-tape parade he deserved, the government sent him to federal prison for nearly two years—for the crime of telling a set of awful truths. They destroyed his marriage, stole his pension and framed him as the bad guy.

Now he’s a meme. Actually hundreds of memes. If you’ve been online in the last month, odds are you’ve seen some iteration of CIA John, as twentysomethings call him, over and over and over.

John and I knew each other for years, having appeared on one another’s radio shows, and became friends. He’s kind but serious, affable but not one to suffer fools. He’s smart, intellectual and reads voraciously. You can easily picture him as the CIA officer he used to be, hobnobbing with sketchy characters in a hotel bar in Qatar, but he also wouldn’t be out of place in the faculty lounge at a university. In this era of gleeful ageism, John is the kind of older white dude that youth culture reflexively rejects. He’s hardly someone you’d expect Generation Zers to respond to like the Beatles arriving at Idlewild.

“I didn’t know how to go about turning things around” after he was released. John told me. “So I just decided to start saying yes to podcasts. If you’re a 17-year-old kid and you’ve got a podcast that your high school buddies listen to, the answer is yes. Then, about two years ago, I started getting invitations to go on bigger podcasts.” John spent his days appearing on one podcast after another. He was busy. But he still couldn’t earn a living.

Then some kid made a TikTok.

“My niece called me and said, ‘Uncle John, you are blowing up on the Internet.’ I said, ‘Why?’ She said, ‘There are these hilarious shorts of you.’ I said, ‘From what?’ She said, ‘I don’t know. It’s some podcast that you did, but they’re hilarious. You should go on TikTok and look.’ I went on TikTok, and I recognized from what I was wearing that it was from the ‘Diary of a CEO’ podcast. Some kid just took that interview, cut my stories up into shorts, changed my voice from my regular voice to an ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ voice and then to this deep ogre’s voice, and then laser beams are shooting out of my eyes.”

“It went crazy to the point where I’m approaching a billion views. It’s nuts to me. The next day, I was filming a documentary with a German production company on the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. We were down at the Pentagon for three hours, and 10 people stopped me for selfies. These guys said, ‘What’s up?’ I said, ‘I’m not really sure. I seem to have exploded online, but I don’t know why.’”

John’s life has changed…forever? Who knows?

Who knows why the algorithms love him?

What is certain is, thanks to that TikTok and the podcast episode that inspired it, John’s penchant for truth-telling has lifted him from relative obscurity—unlike Edward Snowden and Julian Assange, he wasn’t a household name—to international renown.

I’ve had a first-row seat to John’s reversal of fortune.

About a year ago, we decided to co-host a fast-moving daily podcast in which we analyze and comment upon the day’s news, with an emphasis on foreign affairs. “DeProgram” puttered along last year, steadily picking up subscribers. Then, as I witnessed one evening a couple of weeks ago in Washington, John exploded. And so has our show.

“That night you and I went out to dinner, and we were stopped how many times just at dinner?” John recalled. “It was nuts. We couldn’t get through dinner at this random Chinese restaurant in Chinatown.”

Cameo, which lets you hire a celebrity to record your bespoke video, called John to tell him he’d set the app’s all-time record for requests. He’s been approached by Tom Ford to become a spokesman for their glasses. Answer: yes. Also by Viagra. Answer: no. He’s been signed by Creative Artists Agency.

John Kiriakou is America’s biggest, newest, unlikeliest star. People invite him to their weddings, reach out to him when they’re feeling suicidal (he calls back), declare that they could stare into his eyes and listen to his voice forever. He does have a nice voice.

“I went to dinner with a group of friends,” John says. “We always get together and think big thoughts and have these very intellectual conversations. One of the professors from Georgetown brought her 16-year-old daughter. She was just staring at me the whole time, like she couldn’t believe she was having dinner with CIA John. Then I noticed a couple of times, like I’m talking to her mom, and she’s discreetly going ‘click.’”

John is happy and relieved, but also conflicted. “It’s a little disappointing at the same time, because I like to think that I’m a serious person,” he says. “I have serious things to say. People have gone back to watch my appearances on Joe Rogan and Tucker Carlson. Rogan’s producer told me the other day that my appearance on Rogan in October is now the third most-watched Rogan episode ever, behind Donald Trump and Elon Musk. For ages, I was fourth behind Matthew McConaughey. Now I’m 1.1 million views above Matthew McConaughey. For what reason? Just because I have lasers shooting out of my eyes?”

Why John?

“Somebody said to me, it’s because people believe that I’m telling the truth. There’s so much spin out there and so much political bullshit on both sides that people are looking for someone who’s telling the truth, Ted.”

As John’s co-host, I’m getting a little residual late-life love too, as suddenly strangers who watch our podcast have begun greeting me on the street. No Cameo requests yet though.

I asked John: Is it fair to say that, hilariously and bizarrely, the Internet has discovered that they’re in love with your authenticity as the result of a completely inauthentic portrayal on TikTok?

“You’ve hit it on the head,” he replied. “There it is right there.”

Today we discuss:

• Pentagon officials told Congress that they estimated the cost of the war against Iran had exceeded $11.3 billion in the first six days alone.

• Trump tells the G7 Iran is about to “surrender.” But Arab diplomats say Iran, emboldened by its ability to rattle the global economy by choking oil shipments, has laid out steep preconditions for any return to talks. Iran is demanding that the airstrikes stop before a cease-fire, and firm guarantees that it won’t be attacked again, reparations for damages and the removal U.S. forces from the region.

• Four of six crew members died after a U.S. military KC-135 refueling aircraft crashed into another plane in Iraq. A Michigan synagogue and Old Dominion University came under terrorist attack. Dubai’s financial center is under drone attack.

• Afghanistan’s Taliban government accused Pakistan of targeting civilian homes, killing four people in the capital and two in the east, as fighting between the two nations entered its third week.

• Outdated DIA targeting data—dating back at least 10 to 13 years—probably resulted in the Feb. 28 U.S. bombing of the Shajarah Tayyebeh elementary school mistaken missile strike that killed at least 175 people in Iran, mostly children. Is recklessness the norm for America’s “high tech” warriors?

400 million barrels to be released from International Energy Agency oil reserves as Iran effectively blocks the Strait of Hormuz.

• As John Thune battles conservatives for refusing to alter Senate rules and mandate a traditional “talking” filibuster that would force Democrats to hold the floor to block the Save America Act, Trump trolls the Senate majority leader: “He’s got to be a leader.” Does Trump know Save would hurt him and the Republicans?
