But Trump’s billionaire allies Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are pushing hard for H1B visas that allow tech companies and other employers to import foreign workers. So far, Trump seems to be siding with Team DOGE. Will this controversy tear apart his fragile coalition?

You leave out the crucial detail. To channel my inner Hannibal Lecter, “No. That is incidental. What need does he serve by bringing in foreign workers?” It isn’t about importing foreign workers. It’s about paying as little as possible and having leverage over the employees to keep them cowed. That will help deflate all tech salaries (check your Frederick Douglass for the maxim about slaves driving down freemen wages).
I am amazed at how the 1% wins and keeps winning when they’re 1. playing with the same strategy guide they had back when they were all watching the field hands from the verandah while sipping mint juleps, and 2. making no effort to hide that strategy guide.
