In the final analysis, I think that this is pretty much what happened. This cartoon from last week shows the unenthusiasm of Democratic voters. This was of course caused by the Hillary Clinton campaign, which made a conscious decision to move to the right after the primaries and snub the liberal base that supported Bernie Sanders.
