I’m about to order my new iMac (thank you thank you thank you). Now I need a scanner.
Anyone know what the best flatbed scanner is for the new Mac OS 10.7? I love my old HP ScanJet 7400c but the drivers won’t be supported on this.
A $100 scanner won’t do the job. I have one of those for my laptop and it’s great for travel but doesn’t deliver the high-quality resolution needed for graphic arts on a regular basis. Of course cheap is great, but the buzzword here is: quality. Also if possible one that is bigger (at least 8/5×14, or 11×17 would be awesome) to facilitate scanning of larger comics.

For photography (slides and transparencies) I’ve been using an Epson V500, but it is limited to 8.5×11, everything else goes off for drum scanning 🙁
Large-format gets pricey quick, but every once in a while the Epson Expression 10ks come up used or refurbished, like this one: http://www.adorama.com/IES10000XLGR.html?utm_term=Other&utm_medium=Shopping%20Site&utm_campaign=Other&utm_source=gbase
Ted,
Are you sure the driver’s won’t work? I have had some pretty old drivers running under Lion (though honestly HP drivers tend to suck).
@suetonius: No, I’m not sure yet. I’m going to try using the old one, but I’d be pleasantly surprised if one can make the jump from PowerPC 10.2 to 10.7 Lion.
I found this link for a driver:

People there say it works perfectly – with your scanner on the computer you are buying.
I should add that the guy who posted the information said the following (and it was “confirmed” by another poster)… as with many things in life, there is a catch. Isn’t it great how we can get something like Gimp for free but you have to pay $40 for a wee bitty piece of software that HP and or Apple should provide free…
“I think I have found a solution to our driver problem with the HP Scanjet 7400c (and other widowed scanners) in OSX Lion. There is a third-party driver that works with this scanner (and many others) in Lion, VueScan 9.0.53, available at http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html. You can download a trial version, which I did and discovered that it seems to cover all functions, including the scanning of film or slides with the overhead lamp. The trial version shows watermarks on the scan. To scan without them, one needs to purchase the driver for $39.95.”
VueScan is supposed to be very good. A lot of photographers prefer it to other scanner drivers,
