Afghan Notebook #42

  • This guy embodies the reason the mujaheddin appeared in the 1980s; rural Pashtuns* were enraged that their daughters would have to go to school with boys and actually learn something instead of hanging around the house doing dreckwork untill they were married off. It was the city people who despised the Red Army on religious or political grounds, but the illiterate poor hated the government and the occupation first for the change they were imposing, then for the death and destruction of the Soviet-Afghan war.

  • * And by “rural Pashtuns” I mean the men alone.
