Afghan Notebook #30

  • Please connect this with previous post that all restaurants near the border remained open all day.

During Ramadan, women are prohibited from fasting for one week out of the month, and travellers and the sick are exempted from fasting if they find it too difficult.

When I arrived in the Middle East, I was told that, in years past, all restaurants remained open, but had to put newspaper over all windows so they could serve travellers and women; but now, all restaurants must close during Ramadan from 90 minutes before sunrise until sunset (then they’re open all night).

Tents must be provided where any fasting Muslim can break his fast for free at sunset. Have you seen any of those tents?

And, after eating all night, I’ve never been hungry during Ramadan, it’s thirst that’s the problem (as today’s report confirms).
