Supporters of Ukraine keep saying that it’s a democracy. But it’s not. President Zelensky has banned rival political parties and shut down all media outlets except for official state media that supports him. On the other hand, the United States doesn’t really have much democracy to brag about either.

The American version of totalitarianism, what George Carlin referred to as “the illusion of choice,” is far superior. Who needs to shut down stations or maintain a huge propaganda apparatus? Bush league. Twenty-two minutes a night of the talking heads dressing up in their parents’ clothes and pretending to be adults as they ladle out the slop between pharmaceutical ads on six or seven major outlets? That’s how you control a population.
