Trump Out to Destroy Democracy

Donald Trump, his opponents say, threatens democracy. Democracy in America was already in big trouble long before Trump entered politics, though. It would be a pity to believe that defeating Trump goes far enough to defend democracy.

I, for one, welcome our orange overlord. …

My one certainty is that if Harris wins the election (I doubt she will, but for the sake of the argument), she’s going to do a whole lotta nuthin’. She probably will have neither a Senate nor a House majority. But if she did? So what. “With 70 democratic senators and a 110% majority in the House, I have to serve ALL the people. Whether they’re just millionaires or my corporate masters, the billionaire class, I have to fight hard for them too. And they told me they didn’t want it. Keep taking that echinacea. There’s nonsense science that says it’s as good as a full course of chemo.”

With Trump? Although Trump has the same corporate owners and masters as Harris does, Trump has so much disgust coming at him from the left (some of it legitimate and some of it just histrionics) that I don’t see any other hope for waking up enough of the brain-dead to get a legitimate uprising going.

Bizarrely, if anyone can fix this broken system, it’s Trump. No one else can screw things up sufficiently to actually cause a sufficiently complete collapse to force everyone to put aside their idiotic me-me-me-me-me routines.

    • Indeed, Alex, I think America is more likely to undergo devolution than revolution. Think of it as “a national divorce.” These united states can disunite, and turn into several smaller countries where the clear majority can do as they see fit without the clear majority in a neighboring country/former neighboring state that thinks differently having any say over it. Plus, it’s the end of “American imperialism,” and the whole world can relax….unless, of course, Uncle Sam pitches a nuclear fit at the prospect of the demise of American hegemony. In any case, I have no idea what is going to happen over the next several months, and I think I like it better that way!

  • Max Blumenthal and crew has released a documentary film, “Atrocity Inc.,” on the genocide of Gaza at its one-year anniversary. It can be seen on You Tube: https://tinyurl.com/2skf9fdd

    The edited blurb:
” … deceptions and atrocity hoaxes Israel pushed after October 7 to create political space for its gruesome assault on the Gaza Strip.”

” … US mainstream media’s role as a megaphone for the Israeli government, introducing new lies even after their initial ones were debunked.”

“Atrocity Inc raises serious questions about the official narrative of October 7, while revealing how Israel’s army has consciously engaged in the same hideous atrocities which it falsely accused Palestinian militants of committing. “

  • PS :
Another Gaza documentary: “Investigating war crimes in Gaza” by Al Jazeera Investigations
Note the radioactive producer, view at your own risk.

    • By “producer,” are you referring to Al Jazeera in general, or to a specific individual? A quick look at the page and the beginning and end of the video did not produce a named producer. Whichever, it’s now in my viewing queue. “Atrocity, Inc.” was great, but it looks like we’d better watch these while we can–Meta/the US internet’s catchphrase these days seems to be, “If you can’t beat ’em, ban ’em!”

      • All that I know about the film is on the linked page.
I presume the listed “Al Jazeera Investigations” is the producer. There’s a bit more in the video description.
I’m surprised it’s allowed to remain on You Tube.

  • Can we install AI to TLDR some of these comments? I’m really trying to stay engaged with the faculty lounge here, but it’s getting difficult. Plz advise thx

  • Ted you skipped the big issue, corporate and mega wealthy Indvidual’s donations swaying the political process, vote in a group of progressives and they might get a few social items passed but they will be pushed into to corner on taxes and labor issues. Any real progressives will face a blizzard of cash aimed at defeating them next election, some of them will lower their goals in an effort to stay in office, others will hold to their principles, but they won’t have much to show voters because they were blocked at nearly every turn. The power of money has even reached into the Supreme Court.

There are third parties on the ballot, we just have a system where they have almost no influence, but they should be on the debate stage.
Under 18 voting, not a good idea
Felons voting, bad idea but we should insist that parolees and anyone that owes fines can vote
Electoral college that lets small states and swing states decide elections, no
Pulling names off the voter rolls just because it matches a name in another state, really wrong.
