Trump’s Fascist Deportations: Will Economic Ruin Break the Spell?

Many policies of President Trump spark division among voters, yet his deportation measures retain strong support. A Fox News poll from late April 2025 showed Americans approve of Trump’s border security policies, 55% to 40%. To shift public opinion against him, a significant economic downturn might be necessary. Polls indicate economic concerns could erode his base: a Reuters/Ipsos poll (April 30, 2025) reported only 36% approve of Trump’s economic stewardship, with 56% disapproving, as fears of recession grow (82% of voters worried, per Decision Desk HQ/NewsNation). This highlights a troubling reality where economic stability overshadows other issues. If jobs vanish or inflation spikes—91% of voters are concerned about rising prices—support for deportations may wane, revealing our misplaced priorities.

Not to be … well, me. But, “Polls indicate economic concerns could erode his base.” Isn’t that ALWAYS the case? Or at the very least, so often the case as the be a pretty safe bet? When a politician gets a crap economy, they lose their job? But the polls about economic concerns and the polls about the border are probably not inversely linked. That is, the worse the economy gets, the MORE people will believe that the problem is those gosh darn illegals. Why? Scapegoating. And the media’s inability to explain anything.

I used to think that it was ineptitude that explained how the democrats mishandled the border. Then I realized that ineptitude alone wasn’t enough. Sending Kamala “the cloud is above us, let me have more wine” Harris to the border to solve the problem was like sending the Three Stooges to fix the leaking pipe (except I laugh when I see the Stooges’ antics). Her ineptitude was one thing. That the party let her go fumbling toward Bethlehem was another entirely: manufactured ineptitude. (Don’t want to do something? Don’t want to ever get called on to do something on a regular basis? Do a total screwup of a job on it. You’ll never be asked again. “Babysit Skylar? Remember what happened the last time we had Joe Biden watch the kids? He traded her for an ice cream cone.”)

The Republicans won’t fix the border because it’s a rallying issue for their voters. The democrats won’t fix it because it’s a fund raiser for the very well off people who run the party. A win-win, as they call it in the grift industry.
