The Show Goes On

As we’re learning via the John Podesta emails being released via WikiLeaks, Hillary Clinton has a voracious appetite for fundraising, often by selling speeches for six figures. That’s a pretty addictive revenue stream. How will she channel her lust for cash if she’s elected president?

  • Wonder how much FDR took for a fireside chat ? On the other hand, he wasn’t as hard-scrabble as Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton….

  • Something tells me that revenue stream isn’t going to be a problem.

Lookit all the millionaires we’ve got in legislative & executive branches of government. So why would a millionaire spend millions of dollars in order to land a job that pays less than 200k?

    • The Hollywood version was “The Distinguished Gentleman.”

It had a Hollywood ending, of course (spoiler alert), the eponymous distinguished gentleman meets an honest young woman who convinces him to stop selling his vote to the highest bidder, and instead vote for what’s best for America.

In real life, the “Distinguished Gentlepersons” have friends and lovers who are more likely to say, ” I need a new fur/BMW/penthouse,’ and so they have to sell even more votes.

Of course, if she loses the presidency because of the latest e-mail surprise (I did say the election run-up had a Black Swan yet to come), how “valuable” will her speeches be afterward? If Trump wins, he will, very much, go after her, and I don’t think he’s doing it JUST for petty personal reasons. If Weinergate has legs, Trump quite possibly could have some pretty legit reasons for going after her.

We’ll all have a better idea by Tuesday morning. And the election is only 11 days away. Oh, thank God. I’m pulling myself along solely by my will to survive.

  • This cartoon is a necessary rejoinder to this one by Tom Toles (WaPo).

While it is indeed satire (let’s hope?) to suggest that HRC will directly rake in money while presidenting, in reality, those – let’s just say 4 – years effectively function as filler/investment to keep the brand alive so they will get to milk the speaking circuit for a while longer still. Just as they did when Bill had to move out (and the poor things were “broke”). In that sense “public service” is but a necessary interruption from private cashing-in. Is this really all that different from the Donald’s gambit?
