Whether it’s a long-running horror like Israel’s genocide of the Palestinians or a public health menace like smoking, humans tend not to act to put an end to it before a certain tipping point. It comes as small comfort to the victims, of course, that their sacrifice is simply a matter of timing and psychological consciousness.

No one has power to do things. Sure we can demand. Sure we can protest. We have no power. We don’t matter and our thoughts and opinions don’t matter. A big reason suicide is illegal and hated is because on some level there won’t be anyone to exploit if there is a group who can decide they don’t want to live anymore.
