For 1,900 of the last 2,000 years, Jews represented a tiny minority, usually in the low single digits of the population of what is today Israel. Zionists argue that they, and only they—not the other ancient peoples who lived and ruled there—are entitled to live in and dominate the region and expel those who lived there throughout their absence.

While the Israelis are in denial about it, the Palestinians are the descendants of the Biblical Jews. Many of them converted to Christianity when that became the favored religion of the Eastern Roman Empire, and then many of them converted to Islam after THAT became the favored religion, just as many Mesopotamian and Turkish Christians, Persian Zoroastrians, and Central Asian Buddhists did. My mother’s family is Russian Jewish, but the story our DNA tells is that we only lived in “Palestine” briefly, 40,000 years ago, when we passed through on our way out of Africa, on our way to the steppes north of The Black Sea, where we eventually converted to Judaism. It’s the same for a great many other Jews, I’m sure.
