All Hail the Gerontocracy

After his second brain freeze, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, 81, is prompting the question of whether he’s too old for the job. California Senator Dianne Feinstein and President Joe Biden, who both seem too long in the tooth for their jobs, highlight the possibility that we’re descending into gerontocracy.

That old, powerful people don’t want to yield their power, despite their being incompetent, is not surprising. What I find surprising is how many relatively young people are willing to commit elder abuse to keep their positions of very small power. Look at Feinstein in particular. If her aides truly respected her, wouldn’t they refuse to participate in this sort of thing?

They are terrified of worse jobs with other Congresspeople. Feinstein and McConnell are the tip of the iceberg, because there are allegedly a number of senators who are quietly taking senility-fighting drugs.
