Food stamp/SNAP benefits to the hungry were disrupted and cut off due to the month-long federal government shutdown. Among the factoids that were revealed during the coverage of this appalling story was the fact that 1/8 of Americans receive food stamps. How on earth can the United States claim to be a functioning nation when at least 1/8 of its population lives in food insecurity and grinding poverty?

1/8 receive them. I wonder how many people are entitled — let me repeat the word — ENTITLED to them but, due to how the system treats people who need aid (which they’ve paid for via taxes for years and years), don’t apply for them.
