Hidin’ Like Biden

Biden and Harris have both embraced a strategy of refusing press conferences and interviews with adversarial journalists. When you bring this up, each has a ready answer.

The whole thing is so openly transactional now. It’s just appalling. It’s like the actors aren’t even trying to make it look convincing. Anyone with eyes can see that Biden and Harris do not care for each other. It’s like Vivian Vance and William Frawley. Ethel and Fred made a great couple of second bananas, but when “I Love Lucy” wrapped, Vance was asked about doing a show with Frawley about the Mertzes. She declined, in part, because she didn’t want to work with Frawley, but she also declined because she knew Frawley was desperate to do the show. Years later, when Vance heard Frawley had died, she ordered Champagne.

Although “he” (that would be the “he” Ted references Harris as in the second panel) steps livelier than Biden does, she is basically the same sort of stumblebum Biden has been since at least 2020. A corporate shill who parrots the company line and does exactly what she’s told. She isn’t qualified — many of the holders of the veepship haven’t been qualified … for anything, really — to be half-a-heartbeat from the presidency. But Biden needed every damned vote to beat Trump, and Harris probably did turn the trick.

She might be a good prosecutor or lawyer, in that very rigid performative space of the legal system. Possibly, she’s even exceptional at ordering a whole lot of lawyers around. That doesn’t mean she could last eight seconds in Prof. Kingsfield’s contract law class, figure out that Chevy didn’t make a 327 in ’55, or go toe-to-toe with Putin or Bibi.
