It’s meager consolation to be shown to be right after the fact. Especially to the cliques that now comprise the largest, most-powerful aspects of the world of journalism.
I recall the scene in one of the Spenser novels by Robert B. Parker where a character is being interviewed by a strawwoman talk show hostess. Fed up with the inane questions, the interview subject, Rachel Wallace, asks her, point blank, “Have you even read my book?” to which the hostess has to admit that she hasn’t.
Spenser observes, after the interview, that it must be terrifying to go through your professional life not knowing what you’re doing.
I think about that a lot.
