Trump Sends More Troops Into The Afghanistan Meatgrinder

Donald Trump has one thing right: the United States is losing its longest war, the occupation of Afghanistan that began nearly 16 years ago. But his strategy is nothing new and certainly can’t succeed where Bush and Obama failed: sending in a few thousand additional troops. And the justification for the war: unless we throw more good lives after bad, all the fallen so far will have died for naught. Which, of course, they did.

  • Democrats opposed that war until Obama supported it.

One could hardly expect Trump to oppose a unified bipartisan idiocy armed only with his own brand of idiocy.

The slim chance that Trump would differ from the certainty of Hillary’s warmongering has long since dissipated.

So the worm eats, and life (of a sort) goes on.

Really? Doesn’t seem at all remote a possibility, regardless of the source or soundness of any opposition.

    • “Democrats opposed that war until Obama supported it.”

Breaking News: Democrats are once again opposing Trump’s war escalation in Afghanistan.

Democrats say Republican (Bush, Trump) wars bad, and say Democrat (Obama) wars good, even if they are the SAME (Afghanistan) wars.

“Tonight’s speech was filled with bluster but devoid of details and raises far more questions than it answered. In failing to outline any serious definition of progress or success, the President is putting our troops and our NATO allies in danger without giving them the certainty they need and deserve from their Commander-in-Chief.” Tammy Duckworth

  • As I recall the matter, the excuse for the US war on Afghanistan was that the attacks of 11 September 2001 (not to be confused with the attacks of 11 September 1973) were planned in that country (rather than, e g, in the cafés of Hamburg). That as Ted notes above, not a single participant in the above attacks, according to the official history, came from Afghanistan, seems to be irrelevant to discussions of the US military presence in that country….

    • Timothy McVeigh bombed the Murrah building in Oklahoma and hawks called for bombing the country that originated plans for it— assuming it came from the Middle East—even if uncertain about responsibility.

When it was determined to be domestic terrorism, the retaliatory bombing was called off: it didn’t make sense to bomb Oklahoma for an attack originating in Oklahoma.

  • Red meat for white supremacists. They’re pretty much the only support he has left.

He says he wants to stop terrorism – oh, yeah, look at how well that worked out for Bush. Funny how that works, you kill people and they just want to kill you back. 9/11 was retaliation, it didn’t stop us from killing them – why do Our Elected Officials keep insisting that more of the same will result in anything other than more of the same?

      • “[W]hy do Our Elected Officials keep insisting that more of the same will result in anything other than more of the same?”

I will hazard a guess that the two parties are so adept at suppressing democracy, that any deviation from political conformity dooms a candidacy before it starts.

      • Yeah, I remember a day when only the GOP faithful were so thoroughly conditioned. I realized that was an outdated model when UBL was assassinated. The “lefties” were cheering & pumping their fists right alongside the Nazis.

“The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but, on the contrary, that it was impossible to avoid joining in. Within thirty seconds any pretence was always unnecessary. A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness, a desire to kill, to torture, to smash faces in with a sledge-hammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people like an electric current, turning one even against one’s will into a grimacing, screaming lunatic.” – George Orwell, 1984
