On today’s TMI Show, co-hosts Ted Rall and Manila Chan consider Donald Trump’s campaign promises in the light of the reality he will have to face as he returns to the White House in January. He promised mass deportations and still claims he plans to carry them out, but will ugly optics and economic need for more workers pressure him to back down? Were his threats to impose big tariffs on Chinese imports empty, and negotiating tactic, or to be taken at face value? Trump remarked that he had “a concept of a plan” to repeal and replace Obamacare; if so, what would that look like? Should Ukraine expect to be told to negotiate with Russia?

Reailty? Trump? Oh, Ted, I need the name of your supplier because I absolutely could use a hit of whatever he’s mainlining into your veins.
Here’s what will go down. Trump will do the same thing with illegal immigration that he did with “building” that border fence of his. A few people will make a lot of money from the procurement portion of the deal (same as when the democrats are in office), and a few rational people (like Ted) will point out — this didn’t do ANYTHING!
But all the rich liberals will still have illegals cooking their food, mowing their Brazilian-wax lawns, picking their strawberries, at least until the people who can afford to pay (cheap) for those services in cash start to run out — it’s coming soon: a lot of the economic indicators are aligning with how it all looked in 1789 Paris, and oh, my stars and garters, I surely do hope to be one of the people knitting in the front row.
Then, the illegals will simply leave. Why? It’s too expensive to live in the U.S. without the “wetback” economy of smug white liberals (and conservatives) paying slave wages to Mexicans, Guatemalans, Hondurans, etc., who eke out existences in that shadow economy.
In one regard, Trump IS truly like Hitler. Neither actually had a viable plan for when they won. The fervid pitch of fanaticism that fired the Nazis and fires the MAGA crowd? It’s only viable in the moment. Once everything dies down? “Jeez, could you cut the crap with the racial purity, Adolf? My tap water is brown. There’s no chalk in the schools, and if my kids are in this house one more day, I’m going to slit my throat!”
The arc of civilization is toward more cable channels, not feverish political ideology.
