LOS ANGELES TIMES CARTOON: Sign Reform

Sign Reform

I draw cartoons for The Los Angeles Times about issues related to California and the Southland (metro Los Angeles).

This week: The city of Monterey Park, California is considering a law that would require “modern Latin” letters on storefront signs. While we’re at it, why not slap down some aesthetic regulations too?

  • Ted, here I’m not waxing ironic – OK, only a little bit – but what is a «modern Latin» letter ? Can we Swedes, for example, use «Å», «Ä», and «Ö» in Monterey, or do we get our fingers crushed ? Does «modern Latin» mean that only the fonts used by SANCTA SEDES on its Latin language website (http://www.vatican.va/latin/latin_index.html) will be permitted ? I note that the Vatican publishes in Chinese (traditional glyphs, of course, not those dastardly simplified ones that people like myself and a thousand million others use) ; does that mean such fonts will be permitted in Monterey Park as well ?….
