Afghan Notebook #27

  • Ted, I’ve always like your work. The Afghan Notebook is some of the best work you’ve done. It’s exciting to watch your posts appear, I look for them every day. Your Raiders of the Lost Ark narrative is exciting and touching too, particularly this post and the one you had previously posted about your former guide. You are able to effectively communicate the dangers of Afghanistan, I wonder if someday a movie might come of it – it’s very “Year of Living Dangerously.” KUTGW

  • Inspired by the motorcycle…

How much are AK-47s, grenades, rocket launchers?

Way I see it, you are just waiting on the “Luck” of showing up at the wrong “Check point” where it’s just run by bandits who rob, murder and rape (man or woman or animal) anyone who comes by… The country’s pure Anarchy (and the sky is blue, water is wet, etc.) Get a motorcycle go OFF the “beaten roads” with some binoculars (you have THOSE I hope) and investigate anything ahead of you. Steer wide of any superior force, shoot at tiny “Bandit” checkpoints.

The grenades are to deter pursuit. If you don’t mind sunburn on your back (even dressed as an Arab) use “Thermal” grenades, esp for long distance pursuit. Brighter than the sun on brightest day and it’ll melt the road/set off a fuel tank, cause blindness to stupid people. Just DON’T look in the rear view mirror!
