The Glenn Beck Farce

Liberals are quite understandably disgusted by Glenn Beck’s “MLK Speech” ridiculous farce taking place today near the Lincoln Memorial. But it’s worse than they think. What they don’t realize is that this whole thing is nothing but a designed distraction away from the 5th anniversary of the Katrina disaster. A similar distraction took place four years ago when the media decided to dredge up the JonBenet Ramsey case again, right on the 1st anniversary of Katrina.

Five years later, most of the victims of Katrina have not been adequately compensated for their losses, and have not been allowed to return to rebuild their homes. The only media outlet in the country who is dedicating itself to the Katrina issue is HBO, with its series “Treme” and Spike Lee’s new documentary.

It is beyond cynical for Glenn Beck to use Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy in order to sweep the Katrina disaster under rug. In fact, it’s grotesque. But, unfortunately, this is where we’re at in this country.

  • The worst part of this is that Glenn Beck is trying to rekindle support for militaristic adventures amongst the GOP cannon fodder, AKA, the Tea Party. Why can’t he be a reconstructed neocon who now conveniently opposes the wars, like Michael Steele, George Will or the awful Anne Coulter?
And beyond cynical is for this guy to call himself a “libertarian” (like the equally insufferable Bill Maher). You Americans gotta watch out for this wacko, be might be dangerous if he gets into his mind to run for office.

  • Well, Glenn Beck aside, it might interest you to know that I’m just as critical of the Reverend Al Sharpton. The so-called Black leader has done nothing for the Katrina victims in five years, not even going down to New Orleans to give moral support. I’m an equal opportunity criticizer; I don’t let either the Right or the Left off the hook for their misdeeds.

  • You’re kidding right? Glenn Beck organized the Restoring Honor rally to hide the Katrina disaster? I am continually amazed at your complete lack of logic.

  • Susan, nobody who’s ever lived in New York takes Sharpton seriously, that proves you’re sane. He’s a con man of the worst sort. If the Reverend has one good side to him, is his comic vein. He should be doing stand-up.

  • >>You’re kidding right?>>

No I’m not. The whole JonBenet Ramsey/John Mark Karr episode four years ago took place right on the 1st anniversary of the Katrina disaster. The mainstream, corporate media talked about the death of a little white girl rather than the deaths and displacements of hundreds of thousands of Black people from New Orleans. Some of who were still living in Fema trailer camps a year later. But you didn’t know this unless you turned to alternative media such as Greg Palast.

Glenn Beck is trying to sell the notion that white people are being oppressed by people of color. This would certainly come as a surprise to the Katrina survivors who still haven’t gone home after five years and still haven’t been compensated for their loss. What could be worse than Beck setting himself up as some sort of “white MLK” during the very time this nation should be commemorating the 5th Anniversary of the Katrina disaster? If Glenn Beck wants to do something on the MLK Speech Day, he can go down to New Orleans instead of the Lincoln Memorial.

And I have to emphasize this as well: I’m not letting the so-called Black leader Al Sharpton off the hook either. Why is Sharpton paying attention to Glenn Beck when he should be down in New Orleans at this time commemorating the 5th Anniversary?

We are all getting this fucking sideshow when our attention should be on Katrina instead.

  • Susan,
This morning Fox & Friends covered the anniversary of Katrina extensively.

Do you watch Glenn Beck? I mean the show, not excerpts on Media Matters. Glenn Beck does not in anyway try to make the case whites are being oppressed by blacks.
