Call to Action: Write Your Congressperson and Senator!

Many in the media are gearing up for the 2008 presidential campaign, relegating the illegitimate, corrupt, murderous liars of the Bush Administration–with their 28 percent approval rating–to the status of yesterday’s news. But there’s still plenty of time for Bush and his monstrous cronies to do plenty of damage. For the next two years, if given the chance, they will kill hundreds of thousands more Iraqis and Afghans, thousands more American soldiers and waste billions of our taxdollars…and that’s if they don’t start another war, against Iran.

There’s only one way to prevent even more carnage, and that’s impeachment. And there’s only one way impeachment is going to happen, even with a Democratic Congress: a smoking gun so ugly, so undeniable that even Republicans will be forced to call for the entire wretched crew’s heads.

We now have the opportunity to unmask such a smoking gun. And you can help.

The New York Times has published an editorial calling for a Congressional investigation of the Defense Department, which repeatedly claimed that Corporal and former NFL football player Pat Tillman had died while leading a charge against the Taliban in eastern Afghanistan when it knew that, in fact, he had died in a “friendly fire” accident. Tillman’s service had been used by the Army as a recruiting tool for the illegal wars against Afghanistan and Iraq–and his death was used as a noble example young people were supposed to emulate.

From the NYT Editorial: The Pentagon’s investigation of the “friendly fire” death of Pat Tillman, the Army Ranger who became an administration icon for its war on terror, has left the corporal’s family doubtful that the truth has really come out. Even as the Army reaffirmed its belief that Corporal Tillman deserved a Silver Star for valor, the family denounced the award as “part of a cynical design to conceal the real events from the family and the public, while exploiting the death of our beloved Pat as a recruitment poster.”
The circumstances of this byzantine case cry out for Congressional hearings to get an independent evaluation of just who pulled the strings to sugar-coat a terrible battlefield accident as an instance of heroism under hostile fire.

The Pentagon’s internal investigation has tagged nine officers, including four generals, for wrongdoing in the cover-up. Naive observers may be satisfied, but anyone who has watched the Bushist gangsters operate since seizing power in 2000 can’t help being cynical. If four generals are the fall guys, how far up must this go?

Here, I’ll say it: All the way to the top. To then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. I wouldn’t be surprised if the White House–Rove, Cheney and/or Bush themselves–were personally briefed or more directly involved in this massive cover-up. If that’s true–and if it isn’t, why have the Bushies been stonewalling a Congressional investigation?–it would justify impeachment (for obstruction of justice and lying, among other “high crimes and misdemeanors” that brought down Nixon).

Only a full-fledged Congressional investigation, replete with full subpoena powers to get the complete record that despite a series of phony self-investigations the Tillman family has repeatedly been denied by the Pentagon, will reveal the full truth and bring these bastards down.

Write to your Congressperson and both of your United States Senators right now–send your letter by snail mail AND fax since those are counted with greater weight than emails–and demand a full investigation of the Tillman cover-up. Make a little history.

  • Ted, it may be that the "friendly fire" in this case is intentional. I seem to recall reading about a journal Tillman kept where he was expressing doubt about his mission, and was killed as a cover-up.

No doubt this would be labeled "conspiracy theory", though.

  • Yes it would.

This theory sounds extremely farfetched to me.

Theories like this add another reason we need to get to the bottom of what happened to Pat Tillman in Afghanistan. His family deserves the truth, and the American people deserve the right not to have to wonder about what happens in their name with wars funded with their money and fought by their sons.

  • real accountability for anything? I'll believe it when I see it. The reality, Ted, is that the entire nation is culpable here. Whether it was willful ignorance, denial, or shameless bigotry and arrogance, this country WANTED to believe the lies when it was convenient.

Bush won't be held accountable because it requires facing the reality that the American public allowed an incompetent fool to be President.

  • and if it isn't, why have the Bushies been stonewalling a Congressional investigation?

Because the Bushies stonewall anything that might lead to the truth, no matter how small and insignificant. It's their way of life.

That, and I think it's too late for a Bush impeachment to do any good anyways.

  • Well, on April 28th, there will be impeachment protests in towns and cities all over the country. And everywhere people will be using signs, their bodies, chalk, or anything else they can think of to spell out IMPEACH! Several cities have actions planned already, but we invite everybody to start thinking about the most creative, spectacular, beautiful, and clever ways they can come up with to spell it out. This is a spin-off of the BeachImpeach project on the shores of San Francisco where over 1,100 people spelled out "Impeach!" Find out what is going on in your town, or start your own project. Be a part of history and this media grabbing call to defend our Constitution through impeachment.

  • I share your cynicism. But why not drop your Congressman a line anyway? Think of all the time you spend watching bad television and arguing with annoying boyfriends and girlfriends–even if this as much of a waste of time, there's a slightly greater chance of something good coming out of it.

  • Obviously it would have been better to impeach Bush years ago, but better late than never. The alternative, allowing him to retire, would serve as tacit endorsement by the American people of everything he has done.

  • Yes, by all means, please join the patiotic marchers on April 28th.

And also write your Congressperson and both U.S. Senators!

Torture, murder, lies. Abusing the death of a former football player in Afganistan? Is that the best we can summon to imbeach Bush? For all the blundering idiocy at the top of the current administration, they have certainly employed enough cunning to prevent any serious derailment of their plans. I can hear Bush say the same thing again and again: Mistakes were made…. Somehow this response sufficiently justifies status quo to the public and the judicial branch.

  • You don't to trial with the counts you want but rather the ones you have. (Thanks, Rummy, for one of my favorite aphorisms!)

Remember, they got Al Capone for tax evasion.

  • The sad reality is that Bush will never be impeached. AIPAC loves his policies too much, and all of Congress is beholden to the lobbying of AIPAC.

    Ted:

Is there a way to search your cartoon archive by content? I'm trying to find your "Libertarian Man" cartoon from within the past two years, in which he quotes, "Poverty is not the cause of despair! Despair is the cause of poverty!"

  • "Yea, that sounds like a good idea but it'll never work…"

    That's the spirit!

In my opinion, I belive that we should continue to press for impeachment down to the very last second of the Bush regime. I will do just that. Stop watching the blasted mainstream media, they are lying to you. That's what they are paid to do. I haven't subscribed to closed ciruit TV for over 5 years.

As Ted said, write your congressperson. You may just get the usual form letter response (as I always seem to), but you will be heard none-the-less. Enough of these letter WILL sway a person's perception of public interests. The next, and most important part is action. Do not request impeachment, demand it.

For those who believe life will be better after the bushits are out of office are sadly mistaken. Bush has plowed a path through our basic human morals and values. Failure to correct this only emboldens the enemy. It's time to fix this mess. Let's go to work.

  • Starting about a year ago I began tagging my cartoons by subject matter and keywords. They come up on Google searches that way. But I don't think you'll find the Libertarian Man cartoon, since you said it's at about two years old.

Excerpt from The Perry Logan Show web site:

<< If we could maybe herd that 29% of slow learners into one geographical area…?

This is the only solution, people. We airlift the cool people out of Texas and put the wingers there. They can have their own country! America's IQ would skyrocket, and our children would be safe at last.

Meanwhile, the Chosen 29% would form their own country–a nation composed almost entirely of white males. It would have closed borders. There would be oodles of guns. It would not belong to the United Nations. It would have low taxes and a humongous military. There would be no abortions (but the infant mortality rate would be through the ceiling). There would be no Social Security, no Medicare, no FOIA, no OSHA, no EPA, no unions, no public sector, no elections, no habeus corpus.

Oddly, there would be plenty of gays, but no gay marriage. There would be torture.

It would be Winger Nirvana, and it would burn with a gemlike flame. They would be dead within days. >>

  • While we're at it, we can get Feinstein to sell her 17 million dollar house in SF and have her husband cancel the billion dollar Iraqi reconstructuon contract. Dude, when Al Gore won't investigate the theft of his own election what makes you think they're not in on it.
    Welcome to Hell.

  • Here, I'll say it: you've got some nerve using the Tillman family AGAIN after calling their dead son an idiot… No doubt the inept and corrupt Bush administration didn't deserve a soldier like Pat Tillman in it's army but you've got some nerve bringing this issue up again while failing to recognize your own bias aginst the military.

Forget Pat Tillman, Ted… You're just embarrasing yourself again.
