Award-winning political cartoonists Ted Rall and Scott Stantis take on the week’s news and current events on the DMZ America podcast.

The world of politics shifted dramatically with the announcement by longtime Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell that he would step aside from his position as minority leader, but stay in the Senate. A succession battle has already begun. What Ted and Scott are more interested in the message being sent by an 81-year-old politician, who has been seeing struggling with aging in public, to the president.

Idaho botched the attempted execution of a high-profile serial killer at the same time as Texas successfully executed an inmate who was probably innocent. Meanwhile, Alabama and Ohio say they will continue to use the bizarre and torturous nitrogen method to kill more inmates, despite the fiasco in Alabama a few weeks ago. How can it be, Ted and Scott ask, that the United States continues to deploy capital punishment? As an added bonus: a discussion of Christianity!

Finally, Bumble and other dating apps are having major financial issues as Generation Z turns against the idea of finding true love online in favor of doing it the old-fashioned way.

DMZ America Podcast #130: Another Ivy League President Fired, Israel Gone Wild and America’s 250th Birthday

In the first DMZ America Podcast of 2024, editorial cartoonists Ted Rall (from the Left) and Scott Stantis (from the Right) discuss the world in politics and current events.

First, Claudine Gay resigned as president of Harvard University after drawing criticism for failing to clearly condemn antisemitism at a Congressional hearing, and then being exposed as allegedly having plagiarized dozens of times in her academic career. Right-wing conservatives are celebrating having claimed a scalp and dealt a blow against DEI, but should liberals mourn her departure?

Second, Israel claims responsibility for the drone assassination of a leader of Hamas in a suburb of Beirut, Lebanon. On the same day, two bombs killed over 100 people attending a memorial service for an Iranian general assassinated by an American drone in 2020. Are the two events linked? Will there be repercussions in the form of a larger regional conflict?

Finally, we are coming up to the 250th anniversary of America. It’s anybody’s guess what it will be called.

DMZ America Podcast #111: Trump Indicted for Jan. 6th, Kamala Harris Less Unpopular Than Biden, Texas Border Buoys Kill Migrants

The long-awaited indictment of former President Donald Trump for his role in the January 6th Capitol Hill riots took place this week, bringing to 78 the number of criminal accounts faced by the Republican frontrunner for president. Scott believes Trump faces serious jeopardy, but Ted doubt a jury, even in deep-blue Washington DC, will convict based on the legal theory that Trump must have known that he had lost the election to Biden and acted differently nevertheless.

Most Democrats would rather see a different candidate than Joe Biden, and a new New York Times poll indicates just how bad things are going for the president: Democrats are less unenthusiastic about Vice President Harris, one of the most historically unpopular political figures of all time, than Biden. Also, in the mix: the Hunter Biden laptop scandal is about to blow, with the big question of the week being: did the president take millions of dollars in bribes from a country for whom he later went to war?

Texas Governor Greg Abbott defied the federal government, placing a plastic buoy wall in the middle of the Rio Grande river along the international border separating the United States from Mexico. Now migrants are drowning in the river as a result. As Scott points out, this should come as a little surprise, considering what a nasty person Governor Abbott is and how corrupt Texas politics can be.
