Democracy Isn’t a La Carte

The most effective Republican talking point against Joe Biden’s attempt to forgive outstanding student loans is that people who didn’t go to college shouldn’t have to pay for those who did. But in a country as big as the United States, everyone inevitably has to pay for other people’s choices and politics.

  • “Did they get you to trade hot ashes for trees?”
That probably came after convincing you that a nation can be built, and maintained, on a foundation of bottomless avarice … and proud & aggressive ignorance.

  • This reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend a very long time ago about the notion that life isn’t fair. “Perhaps,” he observed, “life is fair. It’s all just random, and some people just get more by chance. We all have the same odds of winning the lottery, but almost none of us do. Doesn’t mean the lottery isn’t fair.” Most of that student debt will never be paid. There simply aren’t enough “good” jobs out there. The mathematics is pretty simple. It’s a little like the Club of Rome stuff from the 1970s. We will, eventually, run into a wall, or trip on one. In either case, we got a whiff of it with Covid. And those were just little supply chain disruptions. Imagine when there’s nothing in the supermarket. Not just no toilet paper, but no baby food, no canned corn, no fresh vegetables, no meat, no milk. “Oh, that could never happen.”
When it does, I’ll have very little time to tell you “I told you so.” So I’ll do it now.
