Polarized

Pundits say the US is politically polarized between the Democrats and Republicans. But the two parties are more similar than alike: ideologically far to the right. From assassinations to preemptive wars to drones to kowtowing to business to backburnering the environment to torture, the Democrats and Republicans embrace extremist right positions.

  • But Ted, isn’t that the very definition of «democracy» – a choice every four years or so between a figure fronting for the far right and one fronting for the even further right (and both pimping for the super rich) ? Don’t tell me I’ve misunderstood the whole thing !…

  • If I could have only one thing that peeved me about American politics, it would probably be that the mainstream states without thought that we are terribly polarized. It goes to show yet again that how important appearances are. So long as the sides scream angrily at each other, not many notice they govern the same…

It really is “yer not doin’ that right!” Whether it is violent foreign interventions, giveaways to the rich, spying, deregulation, supporting Israel…

  • Perhaps this is why they became enemies!

  • I never, in a million years, would have guessed that I’d see an Oglaf link on this site. The internet is shockingly small.

Powerful Democrats run from the word liberal while choosing rightwing policies, which is refreshingly consistent. Democrats haven’t realized how dangerous it is to be called rightwing, so there’s no propagandic pushback to that accurate description. This is a good thing: it means that, in this instance, educating someone about politics doesn’t require a ton of deprogramming.
