Fat King, Skinny Subjects

Even though the standards of the Trump administration are low, the Republican refusal to release funds that were already appropriated to help hungry Americans who receive food stamps get food is stunningly cruel.

The system works. As anyone who has gone through the “welfare” system can tell you, it is — intentionally — designed to humiliate. The functionality of that aspect of the system is to crush as much self-worth, as much of whatever remaining dignity the individual has managed to retain, so that the individual will be easier to control. The best prison is the one you put yourself into. And who handles that aspect of welfare? People who, themselves, have been on the receiving end of similar abuse and mistreatment by the system. It self-perpetuates, otherwise it wouldn’t work. There aren’t enough billionaires to do all that work themselves.

I haven’t checked today’s Times yet. But I’m sure it will be … hang on, let me jump there quick. … There it is. Just like I thought.

Headline: “The Shutdown Is Over. For Many SNAP Recipients, the Scars Remain.”
Blurb: “Some recipients have seen their benefits return but are worried they could still be taken away. Others wonder whether the funding could be stopped again.”

Anyone who depends on SNAP is always worried the benefits could be taken away or run out or be cyberswiped. Read the two sentences of the blurb; they say the same thing. When I have a chance, I’ll skim the article, but I know it isn’t going to say Word 1 about how or why we live in a system where so many people require this aid in the first place and where that aid is part of a process that is so degrading.

And don’t forget to read the article about the nuns who bake, or the billion-dollar art collection. Really important stuff those things.
